Germany - Externsteine

Externstein was most likely a pagan site until paganism was outlawed in Germany by Charlemagne in 782 AD.  This outcroping of rock pillars doesn't seem to belong in this wooded area.  It is located north of Paderborn in northern Germany. We visited on a cold winter day in December.

There are a number of astronomical alignments.  The first rays of the summer solstice shines through a hole, up high on the rocks. The one-year-old child is there to show the relative size.

This was a delightful excursion that both kids and adults enjoyed.
