Turkey - Pamukkale

Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish. It is in Denizili Province in southwestern Turkey. Pamukkale's terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by water from the hot springs. It is a delight to walk along the paths that go around the pools of blue water. Since 2nd century BCE, people have been bathing in these hot springs on the side of a hill. Today they let you step in a few of them. People used the springs to soothe their ailments, and many died here. A Necropolis is nearby. Google 'Pamukkale images' for gorgous views of the pools. This site was one of the main reasons I wanted to go to Turkey, and it didn't dissappoint.
Beside the springs are the remains of an ancient Greco-Roman city, Hierapolis. Both the hot springs and Hierapolis are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
